The History of the Middle School

Moon Area Middle School has housed every grade of secondary students through its more than half-century life. Opened in 1954, as Moon Area’s first custom-built high school, the building became a junior high school welcoming seventh through ninth grades in 1968.

In 1989, as educational standards throughout the nation evolved, so did Moon Area. Freshmen were moved to the high school and sixth-graders left the district’s elementary schools to attend classes at Moon Area Middle School. Like the high school, it has remained structurally similar to its original construction with only cosmetic updates.

The oldest building still standing on the secondary campus, it will hold students until 2011-12 school year. According to the current construction phasing plan, it will be demolished in 2012 as middle school students and fifth-graders move to their new classrooms in the completely renovated high school.
