2016-17 Moon Area Middle School Program of Studies
Excellence is our priority. We strive to provide an educational environment that offers the opportunity for all students to reach their full potential, while preparing them for a future in a global society.
Our Academic Performance
Seven of the eight Moon Area School District’s schools registered significant increases in student achievement according to School Performance Profile (SPP) data published Nov. 6, 2014, by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
PDE released SPP results for each of Pennsylvania’s 2,945 schools. Four Moon schools were among the top 10 in Allegheny County. In fact, three of the top five elementary schools in Allegheny County - Allard, Brooks and McCormick – are in Moon. Moon Area High School’s SPP was third highest in the county.
School Performance Profiles, which are available online at www.paschoolperformance.org, assign a score, based on a 100 point scale, to every public school in the commonwealth. Moon Area School District schools were assigned the following scores:
2014 School Performance Profiles
Allard Elementary 99.0
Bon Meade Elementary 90.9
Brooks Elementary 97.6
Hyde Elementary 82.7
McCormick Elementary 97.3
Lower Middle School 87.4
Upper Middle School 93.4
Moon Area High School 98.4

McCormick Elementary ranks fifth among elementary schools in Allegheny County and is tied for 12th in Pennsylvania.

Our Arts Education
Each school day and many evenings, music can be heard in hallways throughout our schools as student artwork brightens and lines those same passages. From theater to painting to sousaphones, the Arts are regarded as an integral portion of a well-rounded elementary and secondary education.
Moon Area School District was named among the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation – one of only 376 school districts in the nation to earn this distinction in 2014. The NAMM Foundation recognizes schools that have demonstrated exceptional efforts toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum. There are only 43 school districts in Pennsylvania and seven in Allegheny County that were recognized as Best Communities for Music Education in 2014.
Our Commitment to Technology
We remain committed to providing the latest state-of-the-art technology in all of our schools. Our technology integration practice provides students with the latest desktop and laptop computers, interactive whiteboards and other electronics in most classrooms. All classrooms have high-speed Internet connectivity through the All Connect project, Allegheny County's Regional Wide Area Network (RWAN).
During the 2014-15 school year, Moon Area School District implemented at 1:1 laptop initiative for all students in grades 9-12. The intent is to expand this effort to the middle school in subsequent years.
