2019 PMEA and WACA Recap

PMEA Band 2019

Moon Area High School (MAHS) had many students representing the Music Department at various Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) and Western Allegheny County Area (WACA) Honors Band competitions in 2019.


PMEA District 1 Orchestra Festival

Three MAHS students played in the PMEA District 1 Orchestra Festival January 10-12, 2019, at North Allegheny High School. Mrs. Sarah Lavelle directed the event alongside guest conductor, James Palmer. Mr. Palmer is the Orchestra Director at Allatoona High School in Acworth, Georgia. 

Junior Alex Owczarzak and sophomore Alyssa Lucente advanced to the Region Orchestra Festival at Hollidaysburg High School February 21-23, 2019.

Orchestra StudentsPMEA District 1 Band Festival

Two MAHS students participated in the PMEA District 1 Band Festival January 24-26, 2019 at Cornell High School under the direction of Mr. William Lamb. Guest conductor for the festival was Dr. Jonathan Helmick, Director of Bands and assistant professor of music at Slippery Rock University. 

MAHS senior and clarinet player, Brian Ruppel, moved on to Region Band at New Castle High School March 7-9, 2019.

PMEA Honors Jazz Band Festival

Two students were selected to attend the PMEA Honors Jazz Band Festival February 1-2, 2019, at North Allegheny High School with Mr. Todd Stefan taking the role as host director. 

Guest conductors for the performance were Mr. Michael Kamuf (band 3), Mr. Ralph Ford (band 2), and Mr. Joe Scheller (band 3).

Western Allegheny County Area Honors Band


Eight students participated in the Western Allegheny County Area Honors (WACA) Band January 15-16, 2019 at South Fayette High School under host director, Eryn Carranza.

Dr. John Pastin, the former Dean of Rowan University's College of Performing Arts, was the guest conductor for the event.
