Frankie Bonura and Nick Acuna represented the MAHS wrestling team in Hershey, PA for the Class 3A PIAA Championships March 9-11.
Bonura placed fifth in the 106 lbs weight class while Acuna placed eighth in the 138 lbs weight class.
In the WPIAL tournament, Bonura and Acuna both placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
Acuna was seeded seventh in the WPIAL tournament last week and finished in eighth at the state tournament. “This is a big step up and accomplishment,” said Coach Mike Muraco.
Acuna’s fourth place finish last week at the WPIAL tournament put him in a preliminary match to start the state tournament. Acuna lost his first match on Thursday and then won three consecutive matches, earning his way to the medal round before losing again to take eighth. He won his last match by pinning his opponent in one minute at the buzzer.
Frankie won his first match at states before losing to the eventual state champion of the bracket. In the consolation bracket, Frankie won three straight matches before taking fifth place overall.
“All four WPIAL wrestlers in his bracket medaled at states, which shows how tough his bracket was at the WPIAL Tournament,” said Muraco. Frankie finished above one of those wrestlers on the state podium.
“It is great to see the hard work and dedication that Nick and Frankie put into the past year lead to success at the end of the season,” Muraco said. “They had a goal and committed all their efforts into reaching the state podium.”
