Moon Area High School (MAHS) junior, Leah Blackwell, was recently awarded Honorable Mention for her story, "Kuebiko," and poem, "Tongues are Pink and Unused," in the Pittsburgh Regional Scholastic Writing Awards. The awards are hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project (WPWP).
The competition included over 350 participants across multiple writing genres. Seasoned visual and literary arts professionals blindly reviewed submissions.
According to the WPWP, judges evaluate the literary works based on the Scholastic Writing Awards’ values. These foundations include originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or vision.
Recognition was given at the Regional Writing Awards Ceremony, which is presented by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The event was held at the University of Pittsburgh Fine Arts Auditorium on Saturday, February 25, 2017.
Alumni of the program include Andy Warhol, Robert Redford, and Truman Capote among other well-known artists. The awards program seeks to reward individuals in the writing field to go on and become successful and creative leaders in a variety of career disciplines.
