It's been a big year for Moon Area School District sports and the recognition continued Monday night as swimming, bowling, wrestling, and bocce members were recognized for their accomplishments this season.
First to be recognized were members of the Moon Area High School (MAHS) swim team. The girls 200 medley relay team consisting of Jen DiVito, Leah Baker, Abby Beatty, and Emma Connors finished 16th at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Swimming Championships.
During their Western Pennsylvan Interscholastic Athletic Leage (WPIAL) meet, the girls set a new school record of 1:48.85!
Leah Baker was individually recognized for her performance in the 100 meter breaststroke race at the PIAA meet. In the race, Baker finished 16th. At the WPIAL meet in March, Baker shattered her own school record by four seconds and finished her race at 1:03.71!
It's been a big year for bowling as Jon Kleer won the Boys State Bowling Championship on Friday, March 17, 2017! Kleer also placed fourth at the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League Western Regionals (WPIBL).
The Board recognized Frankie Bonura and Nick Acuna for their performances at the individual state wrestling tournament in Hershey, PA, March 9-11.
Bonura placed fifth in the 106 lbs weight class while Acuna placed eighth in the 138 lbs weight class.
In the WPIAL tournament, Bonura and Acuna both placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
Last, but certainly not least, was the inaugural Moon Area Unified Bocce Team.
The team is composed of special education and regular education students that come together to compete against other local schools. The program is run under the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania.
The team’s overall record was two wins and two losses. The Moon Area Unified Bocce team finished fourth in the Allegheny County Tournament. “The team has made great improvements and competed very hard,” said coach Jason Persing.
Members of the Unified Bocce team include Sudhee Acharya, Samantha Dunn, Maddie Elias, Karen Halligan, R.J. Kanith, Ryan Kelly, Brittany Lioi, Jenna Pulhalla, and Kurtis Stashik.
We are very proud of the tremendous year Moon Area School District has had thus far! We look forward to seeing more accomplishments as the year comes to a close. Keep up the good work!
