Weather is a science standard in Moon Are School District so, the Hyde 4th grade students took a field trip to the local weather station on Shafer Road near Allard Elementary.
The weather station is operated by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Students observed technical instruments that are used to report and predict weather patterns. During the field trip, the fourth graders also learned the role that the weather station has in determining when to deliver storm watches and warnings.
Weather station personnel demonstrated a balloon launch, which is performed twice a day to collect weather data with a radiosonde mechanism.
The radiosonde device collects data by measuring pressure, humidity, and temperature through sensors as the balloon rises. Students watched a video of how the radiosonde device performs the balloon launch.
