The Moon Area Middle School participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Pennies for Patients campaign for the first time this year and the students in grades 5-8 raised well over $10,000 for the cause!
In addition, the staff had a "jeans day" incentive and raised just over $1,000 to contribute to the drive. The campaign was held both online and in class with students bringing in coins and cash donations from home and/or a personalized online giving page through the organization.
The top advisor base classrooms who raised the most online funds and earned a pizza party for their efforts are:
1st Place 5th grade students in Mrs. Mitchell’s class
2nd Place 7th grade students in Mrs. Broderick’s class
3rd Place 5th grade students in Mrs. Lipecky’s class
In addition, the Moon Rotary club donated $250 and are awarding donuts to the top advisor Base classrooms who brought in the most cash and coins. Those respective advisor base winners are:
5th grade - Ms. Shaffer
6th grade - Mr. Snell
7th grade - Mrs. Thompson
8th grade - Ms. Napierski
The campaign was led by teachers, Autumn Cairns and Erin Gilligan. “We are beyond proud of our staff, students, families, and community for all of their campaign efforts," Cairns said.
"We knew that setting a goal for raising $10,000 being that it was our first time doing this was a little over-the-top, but we’ve learned that when our students and staff put their mind to doing something, we are pretty unstoppable,” explained Cairns. “The generosity that was shown by so many people, even if it was small, truly added up to make a huge difference.”
School faculty in both the US and Canada have raised over $368 million since 1993 for LLS.
