McCormick Elementary School celebrated Wellness Day on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.
Moon Area High School student athletes Delaney Snyder, Megan Meneskie, Jarrod Simmons, and Josh Burns spent the day with Mr. Blyzwick’s McCormick gym classes. The student athletes joined Mr. Blizwick’s Morning Milers running club bright and early and helped students keep track of their laps.
The McCormick Morning Milers club is an incentive-based running group that encourages students to have an enthusiastic mindset to exercise. Students gather in the mornings on the blacktop behind the school and are given a unique ID badge with a barcode to scan after each lap. The barcode keeps track of the students’ laps and students are rewarded for different MILEstones (2 miles, 5k, 5 miles, etc.).
"The goal of the club is to encourage physical activity and have a positive mindset when it comes to running, which promotes a healthy and active lifestyle," Blyzwick said.
During the day, the high school students spoke with gym classes about nutrition and exercise prior to joining them in their gym activities.
Outside, Mr. Neal Jacoby’s Garden Club spruced up the garden beds at the school that were once built by former McCormick student and Eagle Scout, Stephen Washington. Planting materials including potting soil, seed cell packs, and various gardening tools were donated by the McCormick PTC. Seeds for the garden beds were donated by Inches Nursery. Each grade will contribute to the garden bed by planting different vegetables with garden club members.
McCormick Elementary spent Wellness Day promoting not only personal health, but the health of the environment!
