Thirteen students participated in the Moon Area High School (MAHS) Spring National Letter of Intent Signing Day in the high school gymnasium on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
Brayden Lange, Ian Faherty, Jonathan McKee, Ryan Osman, Josh Burns, Jayme Kostial, Jared Maxin, Justin Miller, Brendan Pontiere, Ben Romah, Riley Saunders, Joey Sell, and Ryan Cochenour all formally committed to play sports in college upon graduation.
In the fall of 2017, Brayden Lange will play hockey for The University of Akron as a forward. Lange has lettered in varsity ice hockey four years in a row and was selected as the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) Class AA All-Star this year. He was a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Feature Athlete in both 2015 and 2017. Academically, Lange is an honor roll student and has been recognized by the PIHL for his academic achievements.
Ian Faherty will be joining Lange as a forward-left wing for the Zips. Faherty has been a member of the Moon Area varsity hockey team for the past three years. Faherty anticipates majoring in Business at The University of Akron with a goal to sell insurance or real estate. Faherty is also a member of the golf team.
Jonathan McKee will attend Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia this fall as a member of the baseball team. McKee will be a second baseman on the Division III team. He will play under the direction of Richard Carver in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). The two-year MAHS varsity baseball player will become a Bethany Bison this fall.
Ryan Osman will be a baseball pitcher for the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. Osman has lettered on the MAHS baseball team three years and will join the Division III Raiders this fall under the coaching of Paul Hesse in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Osman anticipates on majoring in education this fall.
Josh Burns will join the Washington and Jefferson College football team in the fall of 2017. Burns joins the Division III team under the coaching of Mike Sirianni. Burns will play for the Presidents in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).
Jayme Kostial is a two-year varsity captain for the Moon Area girls’ lacrosse team. The midfielder is a two-year All-American Athlete, All-American National Champion, honor roll student, and the only four-year girls varsity lacrosse player of the Class of 2017 at MAHS. Kostial will move on to play at Gannon University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic conference (PSAC) for the Division II school. Kostial plans on majoring in occupational therapy with a career goal of working in pediatric amputations.
Jared Maxin will join Brayden Lange and Ian Faherty on The University of Akron hockey team. Maxin will play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men’s Division II under head coach, Matt Koch.
Justin Miller will become an inline hockey forward for The University of Akron this fall. Miller is a 2014-2015 Pennsylvania Inline Roller Hockey League (PIRHL) champion, 2015-2016 PIRHL scoring leader, and a two-time PIRHL All-Star. Miller has also lettered in MAHS varsity baseball twice. Miller will play for the Division II team under Joey Nahay in the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League (MCRHL). The honor roll student will major in communications this fall with hopes of one day hosting his own radio or television show.
Brendan Pontiere will play lacrosse for Capital Univeristy in Columbus, Ohio. Pontiere is a 2016 Section Champion and 2017 varsity captain of the MAHS boys lacrosse team. Pontiere will join the Division III Crusaders in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) under the coaching of Dom Marzano. The four-year honor roll student plans on majoring in music technology this fall.
Lacrosse goalie Ben Romah will attend Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania this fall. The three-time lacrosse letterman and two-time football letterman will play for Patrick Geiger in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC). The future Titan will major in sports management.
Riley Saunders will join Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. Saunders is the first member of the Moon Area Rugby Club – Girls Team to be awarded a Division I scholarship. Saunders was named Most Valuable Player 2013-2014, and received the 2016 Scholar Athlete Award and the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Sportsmanship Award this year. The honor roll student is also a member of the basketball team. Saunders plans on majoring in exercise science and hopes to one day become a physical therapist.
Joe Sell will join his fellow ice hockey teammates at The University of Akron this fall as a defenseman. Sell is a two-time conference champion (2016 and 2017), was named Player of the Month for January 2017, named All-Star of Western Conference, was a top 10 scorer of the 2017 season, and had the highest points of defensemen in 2017. Sell plans to major in civil engineering this fall.
Ryan Cochenour will become an offensive/defensive lineman for the Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio this fall. Cochenour will play for the Fighting Muskies in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Cochenour plans on majoring in international affairs with hopes to work with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
