Act 1 of 2006 - The Taxpayer Relief Act
Under Act 1 of 2006 (the Taxpayer Relief Act), qualified Moon Area homeowners will receive a reduction in their 2015-16 property tax bill of $130.57 from gaming monies. To qualify, the property must be an owner-occupied residence and the property owner must have filed a homestead exemption application with Allegheny County. Pennsylvania School Employee Retirement System Funding Crisis
MASD Board of Education members unanimously passed a resolution during their April 12, 2010, business meeting. The resolution urges lawmakers to pursue legislative action to correct massive problems with the Pennsylvania Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS). In 2009-10, Moon Area School District contributed 4.78 percent to the system. PSERS Board of Directors already has voted to increase employer contributions to 8.22 percent for the 2010-11 school year, which represents a 72 percent hike over the current contribution rate. However, projections show that within the next four years district contributions to the system will leap to 33.60 percent - a 602 percent increase from current district contributions. They are expected to stay above 30 percent until 2020. All 500 school districts in Pennsylvania are struggling with this issue that has occurred due to a series of actions in Harrisburg and recent stock market drops.
Senior Citizen Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program
Property tax help is available for Pennsylvania senior citizens age 65 and older, widows or widowers age 50 and older and permanently disabled persons age 18 and older as they live on fixed incomes but are faced with rising property taxes. The state Taxpayer Relief Act is helping seniors and disabled residents remain in their homes and make ends meet through property tax relief. The income eligibility level for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has been raised from $15,000 a year to $35,000 a year, excluding half of Social Security income, and the maximum rebate was increased from $500 to $650 for homeowners.
