MASD Tentative Plan Beginning November 23 update

On Monday, November 16, 2020 school districts in Allegheny County were called to a meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  In addition, I have been in continuous contact with the Allegheny County Health Department.

As of this week, our county has been placed in the “substantial” range for COVID-19 community spread. On Friday, November 20, data will be released again. If the county is in the substantial range for the second week in a row, the Pennsylvania Department of Education will recommend that the district move to a full virtual operation.  The district has consistently followed the metrics and guidance of PDE in making decisions regarding in-person instruction.

We have had several individuals from our Middle School community test positive for COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution, we will move to our Virtual Model for all Middle School students beginning on Friday, November 13, 2020.  Although none of these cases are related to in school transmission, we still ask that all Middle School families and staff take precautions to ensure we can get our students back to school.

At this time, our plan is for our Middle School students to return to our current Hybrid Model (in person four days a week) on Thursday, November 19. In addition, all Middle School athletics and activities are canceled until Thursday, November 19. We will reevaluate the data on November 17 and decide if we will be able to proceed as planned. Operation Status Update -- Sept. 17, 2020 reopening plans

I am excited to announce that we have a plan to bring our students back to school! It’s been far too long since our schools were occupied by our young learners.

The COVID-19 infection data from the Allegheny County Health Department, The Pennsylvania Department of Education, and the Moon Area School District has remained consistently low.  Because of this, our district has begun the process of safely reopening our schools for in person instruction.

As long as the number of COVID-19 cases in our area remains steady or declines, our plan is to begin bringing students back to school for in-person instruction on October 5, 2020.

Thanks to quick thinking and a new partnership between the Class of 1968 and the Moon Area Education Foundation, the class reunion funds will be put to good use. Those funds will now provide eight scholarships to Robert Morris University for Moon Area High School seniors over the coming years.
