MASD Grad Wins Clearview Federal Credit Union Scholarship Owen Masry Scholarship

Recent MASD graduate, Owen Masry (MASD Class of 2022) won the 2022 Clearview Federal Credit Union Scholarship.

"Clearview Federal Credit Union has selected ten outstanding Pennsylvania students to receive $1,500 scholarships for the 23rd Annual Ralph B. Canterbury Scholarship. The scholarship recipients represent a diverse group of exceptional student leaders."

Students Earn School-wide Dunk Tank Celebration dunk tank

Brooks Elementary students celebrated their school-wide behavior success with a staff dunk tank assembly! 

Led by Mr. Lucas Furlow (principal) and Mrs. Kelsey Currie (kindergarten), students were selected from raffle tickets earned throughout the year for being safe, being kind and owning their actions.

Wipro Ltd. Donates Summer Reading Materials to Students Allard and Hyde students with books

Allard and Hyde elementary schools would like to thank Wipro Ltd. for their gift of summer reading!

All Hyde Elementary students in second, third and fourth grade as well as all Allard Elementary students in third and fourth grade were given a new book to take home. In addition, Wipro donated $850 to Hyde to purchase books through Firstbook.

We greatly appreciate their efforts to promote literacy in our elementary buildings!

MAHS Senior Selected for PA Institute of Certified Public Accountants' Scholarship Severin Dengel

Moon Area High School senior, Severin Dengel, was selected as a Pennsylvania high school scholarship winner from the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA).

PICPA awarded scholarships through the Pennsylvania CPA Foundation to students who have an interest in studying accounting in college. He will attend John Carroll University in the fall.

MAHS Takes Home a Gene Kelly Award! Gene Kelly Award crew

The Gene Kelly Awards were held on Saturday, May 28. Out of eight nominations, Moon Area High School won Best Costume Design!

In addition to taking home the Best Costume Design award, Moon also made Gene Kelly Awards history with Jack Cipriani being nominated for two awards in the same night. Jack was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Outstanding Student Artist!

MAHS Invention Lab Students Tackle Project for Pittsburgh International Airport students at the airport

The high school Invention Lab class partnered with the Pittsburgh International Airport this semester to develop possible improvements to the new landside terminal currently being constructed.  The Invention Lab class is part of the high school’s Technology Education program, and it replicates an engineering consulting firm.  The only prerequisite for a high school student’s participation in this class is for them to have previously taken Honors Engineering Design 1.  In the past, FedEx, Pittsburgh Energy Innovation Center, and Premier/USA Pan have worked directly with the class. 

MAHS Senior Named Gates Scholar! Subham Sahoo

Moon Area High School senior, Subham Sahoo, was recently named a Gates Scholar!

"The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Student Selected for Duquesne University's High School Intensive Program Alex Bailey

Congratulations to Alex Bailey on her acceptance to the Duquesne University’s 2022 High School Vocal Intensive program!

The High School Vocal Intensive is an institute for high school singers who love to sing and are considering careers in music! Alex was accepted by audition to this week-long program where she will take classes in voice, theory, Eurythmics and choral singing.  At the end of the week, Alex will perform in a recital.

Alex is a member of Honors Choir, Vocality and Bel Canto.  Congratulations, Alex!

Brooks Parade of the Past Brooks Parade

Brooks Elementary had their Parade of the Past in May.

Sixty-five Moon Area High School seniors visited Brooks Elementary School in May for their "Parade of the Past."

The seniors had a chance to visit each homeroom and get to know the Brooks students as they shared their future post-secondary plans and all about their high school career. 

Parkway Pet Lodge Kennel Painting Contest Kennel Painting

Moon Area Middle School students recently participated in the Parkway Pet Lodge kennel painting contest.

Five 5th grade students -- Sadie McGourty, Emily Jackson, Leon Harn, Luke Harn, Ellen Perrott -- were selected to paint their creative designs on kennel walls so each pet is met with a bright and cheerful message.

The students did a fantastic job! Congratulations!

7th Grade STEAM in Action Announcements

As a part of the STEAM curriculum, students have been working on audio recording, digital music production and video editing skills.

 

Mr. Minamyer’s students have developed “morning announcement podcasts” that require students to create their own music, sound effects and audio recordings to produce a podcast version of the morning announcements.  Using the online music production tools “Bandlab for Education” and WeVideo, students are learning the basics of audio engineering and directly applying those skills to real world digital production.

Two MAMS Students Receive Recognition in The Caring Place's Poster Contest caring place poster finalists

Shawn Sledzianowski, a representative from The Caring Place visited Moon Area Middle School to present two students with an award for their grief poster.

Congratulations to Victoria Collins and Reghan Hiller! Both were finalists in the contest. Out of several hundred poster submissions, only fewer than 10 posters were selected as finalists.

As finalists, Victoria and Reghan received a certificate and each won a $25 gift card.

"We are so proud of their efforts and accomplishments!" Mrs. Lisa Tolliver-Lehman.

MAHS Compete at National Academic Games Academic Games

Moon Area School District students who qualified for the National Academic Games traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee April 21-26 to compete. The students qualified for the national competition at local Academic Games tournaments in our Western PA Academic Games League throughout the school year. 

MASD K-4 Summer Virtual Remediation Program Enrollment Survey 2022 Summer Learning
The Moon Area School District will offer currently enrolled K-4 students a virtual remediation opportunity this summer. Students will be assigned to a MASD teacher where live, virtual remediation will take place using online IXL curriculum in English/Language Arts and Math. All district students currently have access to IXL, and IXL's "Summer Boost" ELA and math skill plans will be used as an outline for summer remediation efforts.
 
MASD will accept enrollment requests through Monday, May 23, 2022.

Students Learn About Middle School Music Music

Moon Area fourth grade students recently had the exciting experience to learn about their music options for the middle school. Students all had the opportunity to participate in a demonstration of instruments in the band and orchestra as well as chorus.

Gianna and Rebecca had the opportunity to rehearse and perform under the direction of Dr. Alexandra Dee from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

MAMS Students Participate in Jr. High District Band Festival PMEA Band Students

On April 22-23, eight Moon Area Middle School students attended PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) Jr. High District Band Festival at South Fayette High School. 

The festival included select students from school districts in Allegheny, West Moreland and Greene Counties. They spent two days rehearsing and playing music under the direction of guest conductor Dr. Travis Weller, with a concluding performance Saturday afternoon.

A student in Miss Evans's 2nd grade classroom sent her Flat Stanley to Disney World! They were kind enough to send back a letter including all Flat Stanley's adventures at the parks and on the rides! They even sent back postcards for her whole class!

High School STEM Club Visits Bon Meade STEM Club

The High School STEM Club, under the supervision of Mrs. Tracy Spinelli, recently visited the 2nd grade students at Bon Meade Elementary School.

Students engaged in multiple STEM activities, which included engineering, biology, chemistry, space, and mathematics. During their rotations, students learned how to extract DNA from a strawberry, adhesion, and cohesion viscosity, how catapults work with building a structure, constellations and how stars are created along with math bingo.

MASD Music Education Program Receives National Recognition best music education

Moon Area School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education for the 9th consecutive year! 

Now in its 23rd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

MAHS Students Finish First at Entrepreneurship Competition First Place Team

Moon Area High School business students finished first in an Entrepreneurship Competition on Tuesday, April 5 at Westminster College!

Students conducted market research, presented their findings, and developed a solution to a real-world business challenge to a panel of college professors. The winning team consisted of Alizabeth Cross, Dan Henry, Austin Hiles, Timmy Kudratullaev, Anthony Lounder, Dominic Prozzoly, Mike Prozzoly, and Anthony Treonze.

Kindness Club Spreads Cheer for the PSSAs kindness club

Middle School students in the Kindness Club wrote a "good luck" message to each student at their school.

Along with notes, each student will get a couple of mints. The notes and mints will be distributed to the students the morning of the first day of PSSA testing on April 25th in their advisor base classrooms.

MAHS Color Guard Places in the Three Rivers Winter Ensemble Association Championships color guiard

On Saturday, April 2, the Moon Area High School Winter Color Guard traveled to Kiski Area High School for the Three Rivers Winter Ensemble Association 2022 Championships.

MAHS Winter Guard 2022 Show was titled “Somewhere,” and featured the soundtrack from the Beatles. They placed fourth out of eight guards in the Regional A Classification with a score of 79.8

Students Earn PBIS Basketball Assembly basketball assembly

Students at Bon Meade Elementary who earned 2 or less discipline majors earned their PBIS incentive, which was a March Madness Assembly. It was a fun-filled assembly with cheerleaders, music, and basketball. The students came out on top with an 8-2 victory. Go Tigers!

Brooks Staff Celebrate All Students! National Autism Acceptance Month

April is National Autism Acceptance Month where we celebrate autism and neurodiversity by spreading awareness and promoting acceptance. The staff at Brooks Elementary are celebrating all those individuals in our Moon Area School District community by wearing “Neurodiversity is Beautiful” shirts throughout the month of April. They premiered the shirts on April 4th as World Autism Awareness Day fell on a Saturday this year.

The April 11, 2022 Moon Area School District School Board meeting has been canceled. The next workshop meeting will take place on April 25th. The next business meeting will take place on May 9th. Thank you.

MAHS Students Compete at PA Speech League State Tournament MAHS

Moon participated in the Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) State Tournament in March.

Juniors Kaveri Guduru and Nivesrita Pulivarthi participated in News Broadcasting (a two-person event) and were crowned state champions! This was the first time Moon had a state champion in speech and debate.

Brooks Students Earn PBIS Reward PBIS

Brooks Elementary students reached their school-wide behavior goal to be safe, kind and own their actions! The children were rewarded with a "Pie a Teacher in the Face Assembly." Mr. Furlow even joined in on the fun!

Westminster Professor Visits MAHS Westminster

Westminster Professor Keith Bittel visited Moon Area High School on March 18. He presented to the College in High School (CHS) accounting class. MAHS students enrolled in the CHS accounting class have an opportunity to earn college credits through Robert Morris University.

US Air Force Rock Band Performs for MAHS US Air Force Rock Band

The US Air Force rock band, Full Throttle, performed a concert for Moon Area High School students and staff on March 24.

World Down Syndrome Day socks

Brooks Elementary School students recently participated in World Down Syndrome Day to help promote awareness, create a more inclusive environment and develop positive relationships.

"Our students are learning to love one another for the things that make them special and that it's okay not to be the same in every way," explained Ms. Kelsey Fatica, K-4 Life Skills Support Teacher at Brooks Elementary.

Kindergarten Bee Bots bee bots

Mrs. Ashbery's kindergarten class has been using Bee Bots to learn coding, which is a part of the STEM initiative.

Students were placed in groups and then each students selected a card that had a number or picture on it. Next the students programed the Bee Bots to go to that space on the board.

The class really enjoyed the activity! In addition to learning the basics of coding, the class learned how to work together and problem solve!

SADD Sponsors Mock Crash for Juniors and Seniors sadd

On Thursday, April 21, 2022 Moon Area High School will present the annual Mock Crash event. This presentation will begin at 1:15 p.m. and will take place on our school campus.  It will be attended by the junior & senior classes one week prior to the Junior/Senior Prom.  The purpose of the event is to bring added awareness of the dangers of making incorrect and irresponsible decisions when driving.

Several Moon Area School District students recently participated in the Odyssey of the Mind regional tournament. Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition for students in grades kindergarten through 12th!

MAHS Juniors Attend National College Fair college fair

Moon Area High School juniors recently had the opportunity to visit a National College Fair! MAHS counselors took 120 juniors to the NACAC College Fair in Pittsburgh where 298 colleges and universities from around the world were represented.

Students in Mr. Finns 8th Grade Tech Ed Classes worked very hard on their “What's so Cool About Manufacturing” video projects. Two student produced videos have been nominated for voting in the Regional Contest.

MAHS Students Selected for PMEA All-State Festival All State

Two students from Moon Area High School reached the highest level a high school musician can achieve by earning a place in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Festival music ensembles.

Senior Molly Hellhake will perform in the All-State Choir Ensemble and senior Lauren Radeschi will perform in the All-State Orchestra Ensemble.

This month-long celebration is a nationwide movement in music education dedicated to advocating and recognizing the profound impact that music education plays in the lives of all children.

MAHS Students Compete in the Western PA Science Bowl science bowl

Moon Area High School had two teams compete in the Western Pennsylvania Science Bowl (WPASB) competition for the first time in our school's history.

Out of over forty teams from local area school districts, both MAHS teams scored in the top 25. Team members were consisted of Sub Sahoo, Mikayla Hribal, Thomas Schmitz, Ananya Yendluri, Owen Vreeland, Chiara Golomb, and Sara Jones.

MAMS Art Contest moon tigers

Middle School art students recently had the opportunity to participate in an artwork competition!

Students in grades 5-8 submitted artwork with the them of "Moon Tiger." The submissions were all considered for the Moon Area School District central office.

The winner is fifth grade student Camryn Kaufman! Congratulations, Camryn! Great job!

Nationally Known Camera Operator Visits MAHS john moyer

Moon Area High School students recently had a unique opportunity when John "Buzz Moyer" visited the high school!

Moyer spoke to students about his film and television career. MAHS students really enjoyed meeting with Moyer and hearing about his experiences.

Moyer is a nationally known camera operator who more than 30 years of experience in the industry. He's worked on many well known projects such as "Sweet Home Alabama," "Rocky Balboa," and most recently "West Side Story."

A Pittsburgh native, Moyer grew up in Sewickley. He went to Ithaca College where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Cinema/Photography.

The Moon Area High School Instrumental Music Department recently traveled to Florida on a performance tour of Walt Disney World. 

MAMS Kindness Project kindness

Moon Area Middle School students created a school-wide Kindness Collage for the month of February!  This project was the school's way of celebrating Valentine's Day and Random Acts of Kindness Day, both of which take place in February. All students created artwork that aligned to their grade level's theme. Then the projects were hung together throughout the school to create the kindness collage. Great job everyone!

Wesley Taylor, who originated the role of Lucas Beineke in "The Addams Family" on Broadway, visited Moon Area High School to talk to students about his acting experience and coach students as they prepare for "The Addams Family: A New Musical Broadway."

Seniors Honor Katarina Nissel Kat

Throughout December and January, MAHS seniors sold t-shirts and wrist bands at school and at the girls varsity basketball games as a fundraiser to honor their dear friend and classmate Katarina Nissel.

Seniors raised over $1,200 and will donate all of proceeds to the Michael Trella Foundation on behalf of the MAHS Class of 2022 in Kat’s memory.

Mr. Bob Matthews, Neville Island native and Vietnam War veteran, visited Mrs. Mayo’s 11th grade social studies classes in February..

Shortly after graduating from Edinboro University and obtaining his first teaching position, Mr. Matthews was drafted for Vietnam. He served all of 1967 for the U.S. Army in an artillery unit in Vietnam.

Middle School students in Mrs. Martindale's STEAM class recently learned about renewable resources.

They kicked off our lesson with an interactive learning platform that uses live data and an interactive map of the U.S.  The data was used to determine specific areas that would greatly benefit from the different types of renewable resources.

Thank you to Moe's Southwest Grill for their donation to Allard, Bon Meade and Hyde libraries to purchase books for the third and fourth grade Battle of the Books!  Thanks to this generous donation, the libraries were able to purchase four copies of each battle book for students to check out of their school libraries.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining transparency with families about the impact of covid on our schools has been a priority.  

As you know, we launched a covid dashboard prior to the 2020-2021 school year. Until now, the dashboard has tracked active covid cases over a 10 day period. However, with the changing guidance from the Allegheny Department of Health, Pennsylvania Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we have updated our dashboard to reflect active cases over a 5 day period.

Moon Area School District welcomes Dr. Lauren Morgan as the new Director of Curriculum and Instruction. 

Dr. Morgan is currently in her 14th year of working in education. She previously served as an elementary classroom and gifted and enrichment teacher. Most recently, she served as the PreK-12 Director of Curriculum and Assessment at South Side Area School District.

Moon Area School District families can now make payments online. The district's new online payment portal is called My School Bucks. Families may access My School Bucks via their Skyward account.

MASD Update -- January 3, 2022 MASD update

Dear MASD Families,  

Today we received an update from the Allegheny County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Department of Health regarding guidance for quarantine/isolation related to COVID-19. Effective immediately, the following changes will be implemented in our schools.  

Please note: Masking is required for all during school hours until January 17.

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful winter break. As we prepare to return to school tomorrow, we have received some questions regarding the CDC's updates to their COVID-19 quarantine guidelines.

Moon Area School District is currently operating under our existing Health and Safety Plan. We must follow our plan until if or when there are approved changes. As you probably recall, the school board approved an updated Health and Safety Plan prior to our winter break. However, that plan does not take effect until January 17.

I have outlined a few details from our current Health and Safety Plan that may help answer some questions as we prepare to return to school.

MAMS Students Win City of Pittsburgh Gingerbread House Building Competition gingerbread champs

Congratulations to the students in Mrs. Schulmeister’s class for winning first place in the City of Pittsburgh Gingerbread House Building Competition!

The team worked very hard during their adapted tech ed classes with Mr. Finn and Mr. Hepak to create their awesome Country Cottage. Gingerbread houses will be on display at the County Building in Downtown Pittsburgh throughout the holiday season for anyone who wants to stop by and see them.

Bon Meade Celebrates Holidays Around the World Lights Around the World

First grade students at Bon Meade Elementary School celebrated holidays around the world. The children learned about different holiday traditions and then created a book about how holidays are celebrated around the world.

Bon Meade Supports Kentucky Tornado Victims Bon Meade second grade

Second grade students at Bon Meade Elementary School supported the Crescent Township Volunteer Fire Department’s mission to help families who were impacted by the tornadoes in Kentucky. On Monday, December 20th, the students and staff presented the Crescent Township Volunteer Fire Department with items that will be donated to those in need.

Trent Fraley Signs National Letter of Intent Trent Fraley

Trent Fraley signed his National Letter of Intent to play football at Marshall University!

Trent is a two time all conference athlete, a finalist for the Bill Fralic Outstanding Lineman Award and a Fab 22 recipient. His career goal is to play football for as long as possible and then get into coaching. Trent has received the Scholar Athlete Award, made honor roll and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Senator Robinson Visits McCormick Elementary Sen. Robinson

Senator Devlin Robinson recently visited McCormick Elementary School. He met with district leaders to talk about some of the challenges our schools have faced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. He also got to see some of the technology the district has introduced to help support our students.

 

McCormick Stuff-A-Bus stuff a bus

McCormick Student Council sponsored a toy drive to coordinate with Stuff-a- Bus and the Toys for Tots organization.

On Friday, December 3rd, 2021, Mrs. McCleary, Dr. Moore along with the officers of student council -- Mason Sieracki, Cullen Gentile and Gia Repko -- dropped off over 200 toys collected by the generous students at McCormick Elementary. It was a morning filled with smiles and happy hearts. The gifts will be donated to children locally in our community.

Brooks Elementary Supports West Hills Food Pantry Brooks Winter Donations

The Brooks Elementary School's Student Council partnered with the West Hills Food Pantry this holiday season to contribute to their mitten, scarf, and hat drive. 

Brooks families brought in hundreds of donations that included the warm weather clothing and stocking stuffers. The Executive Council members helped to pack up the donations on Monday, Dec 13th, and the donations were delivered for the Pantry's drive on Tuesday, Dec 14th.

Brooks Fourth Grade Spreads Holiday Cheer Students at Kips

Brooks Elementary 4th grade students in Ms. Bracken's class filled Operation Christmas Child boxes for children all around the world. 

This project took place inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom, students discussed the gift of giving and what this box would mean to a child in need around the world. The class watched some videos online about the boxes and their journey to each recipient. They also discussed what essential items might need to go inside.

AP US Government and Politics Guest Speaker guest speaker

Students in Mr. D’Eramo and Mr. Trapizona’s AP US Government and Politics recently had the opportunity to meet Mr. Jason Richey, a local attorney and candidate for Pennsylvania Governor.

Mr. Richey discussed a brief history of Pennsylvania politics, including topics such as economics, taxation, education and more. He also encouraged students to register to vote and stressed the importance of civic engagement.

MASD Winter Weather Plan delay/closing procedure

Winter weather is here! As we prepare for the possibility of weather-related delays and closings, we want to make sure families are as prepared as possible.  

If we need to physically close our schools due to weather, we will have a traditional snow day (no school/ no virtual instruction). The day will be made up according to the district calendar.

If you're walking the halls of Allard Elementary in November, you're sure to find one very special hallway.

Each year, first grade teachers Mrs. Rudi and Mrs. Stofan organize the Hall of Heroes. Students and staff send in photos to hang in the hall in honor of Veterans Day. 

COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Announcement UPMC

UPMC Children’s Hospital and Children’s Community Pediatrics will be hosting a COVID-19 Pfizer Vaccine Clinic for Children ages 5 to 11 years old. The clinic will be pediatric focused with a child friendly environment including distraction rooms, art therapy station, treasure chest giveaways and much more.

Kindness Day at Bon Meade Kindness

Students in our Bon Meade's 4th grade Kindness Club helped all of the staff and students celebrate World Kindness day by wearing kindness attire or a sweater like Mr. Rogers.

McCormick Students Spread Joy to Hillman Cancer Patients kindergarten

To recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the students at McCormick Elementary teamed up with the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh. Together they coordinated efforts to bring positivity to the patients who are currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

MAMS Students Completed a Veterans Day Service Project veterans day service project

Moon Area Middle School 5th and 6th grade students completed a service project to honor veterans on Veterans Day. 

Students selflessly donated some of their Halloween candy this week in an effort to supply candy for holiday military care packages. All candy was sorted, packaged, and will be sent to service men and women overseas in time for the holidays.

McCormick Elementary Honors Veterans Veterans Day

In honor of Veterans Day, McCormick Elementary students completed a reflective form recognizing family members who served or are currently serving in the military. Forms include their Veteran’s name, picture, branch of the military, years served, and relation to student. All of the forms came together in McCormick's foyer to create a “Wall of Valor.”

MASD Update -- November 10, 20201 MASD

We are aware that the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania issued a ruling that voids the Face Covering Order for schools in Pennsylvania.  

This means the decision to require face masks is once again up to each individual school district. Given this update, we will operate following our school board approved Health and Safety Plan. As a reminder, our district’s Health and Safety Plan requires that all students and staff wear face masks while inside our schools, unless a previous exemption has been approved.

COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for Ages 5-11 COVID-19 vaccination for 5-11

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, in partnership with the Moon Area School District, is offering the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to students 5 to 11 years of age. Allard 3rd Grade Pumpkin Project pumpkin project

The 3rd graders at Allard were challenged to turn a pumpkin into a book character,  by studying the character's traits and listening for clues the author gives to describe the character. 

PBIS at Brooks Elementary pbis

Brooks students participate in a school wide positive behavior program. Students can earn rewards by demonstrating actions that are Safe, Kind, and Responsible (Own their Actions).

Students and staff were able to celebrate their hard work by exchanging their "Brooks Bucs" for tokens that are proudly displayed by the music room.

Kindergarten students at J.H. Brooks Elementary School displayed kindness to a young boy from a neighboring school district who was in need of a little cheer.

PBIS Halloween Edition at Bon Meade Halloween at Bon Meade

Bon Meade Elementary students and staff participated in a school wide dress up day in support of their monthly PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) incentive. Students who earned two or less discipline referrals were permitted to  dress in a school appropriate costume. The top 10 Tiger Ticket winners of the month were chosen to decorate pumpkins with Mrs. Beeson.

Students and staff had a bootiful and spooktacular day celebrating their Tiger Pride!

WPIAL Food Drive food drive

The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) recently held a food drive that included a friendly competition to raise funds and collect food for local food pantries.  The Moon Area School District and community fully bought into the drive and the district contributed $3,789 to the food bank as well as 500 pounds of food!

MASD Music Department presents... "So, you want to be a music major?"

The event will take place on Thursday, November 18 at 6 pm in the Middle School LGI.
Students in grades 7-12 are welcome. To attend this event virtually, please click to pre-register.

This event is a round table discussion with professional musicians and music educators. Topics will include: degree and career options, preparing for college auditions, selecting a college/university and what to focus on as a high school musician. 

The featured speaker will be Dr. Rachel Whitcomb of Duquesne University.

MAHS Cheer Hosts Pink Out Pink Out group photo

Moon Area High School cheerleaders hosted a Pink Out at the game on Friday, October 15 with help from the football team. Prior to kickoff, the names of breast cancer survivors were announced. The survivors were then escorted from the stands onto the field by the cheerleaders and football players. Each survivor received a flower and homemade pink ribbon cookie. It was such an honor to be able to celebrate these women at the Pink Out.

Allard's PBIS October Winners Tiger Tickets

PBIS is a school wide positive behavior program.  All students and staff are encouraged to Be Safe, Be Kind and Own their Actions.  Students earn tickets when displaying these types of actions and behaviors.  The tickets are given by all staff members in and out of the school.  These tickets are then placed into a bin, and we have monthly drawings for prizes and recognition.  The more tickets a student earns, the greater chance their name will be pulled.

Bon Meade Elementary celebrated their top 10 Tiger Ticket students for the month of September.

This is part of the school’s PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) initiative. The top 10 students earned a donut party with Mrs. Beeson and the entire school earned an assembly called “You are Awesome!” The assembly will take place on Friday, October 8th for any student who had two or fewer major discipline referrals.

Allard Staff Recognizes Cancer Awareness Month cancer awareness

September is childhood cancer awareness. Allard staff members wore our gold rainbow shirts to support the fight against childhood cancer. 

MAHS Marching Band Competes in the 2021 Bands of America Central Ohio Regional Championship band

On September 25, the Moon Area High School Marching Band traveled to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the 2021 Bands of America (BOA) Central Ohio Regional Championship, presented by Yamaha.  Bands of America Championships are the premier marching band events in the nation and are entertaining, family-friendly events featuring live music, choreography, and competition.

2022 Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program commended students

Five Moon Area High School seniors are named Commended Students in the 2022
National Merit Scholarship Program.  The students, who rank at the top of the class nationwide,
are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise after taking the 2020 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  Congratulations to Kacie Carrier, Mikayla
Hribal, Thomas Schmitz, Owen Vreeland, and Saiananya Yendluri on this major
accomplishment.

School meal programs nationwide are experiencing many of the same supply chain issues that have impacted restaurants and grocery stores throughout the pandemic.

Attention All MAHS Seniors and Senior Parents/Guardians:

Seniors planning to attend this year's commencement ceremony on Friday, June 3rd are required to order their Jostens cap and gowns by October 31st.  A quick link has been provided by Jostens to help MAHS seniors/senior parents expedite their orders (cap, gown and tassel only). For $27.10, a senior will receive a cap, gown and a tassel.

All students in grades K-4 recently visited the Brooks Elementary Book Fair during library class.  Books, posters, and activity pads were among some of the treasures that students were able to enjoy. 

Allard Students Recognize Local Police Officers September 11

In honor of September 11th, Allard Student Council invited Moon Township and Crescent Township police officers to Allard Elementary to thank them for their service and for keeping our community safe. 

MASD: Please bring your own mask for the bus MASD update

Per the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) federal mandate, everyone must be wearing a mask while riding the school bus. Beginning on Monday, September 27, 2021, our bus drivers will no longer have masks available for students. Students must bring and wear their own mask on the bus. If a student does not have a mask on, they will not be allowed onto the bus. At that point, parents/guardians will be responsible for transporting their child to school.

Bon Meade 4th graders in Mrs. McCullough and Mrs. Bell's classes honored our local fire departments' bravery and willingness to help our community as part of paying tribute to the legacy of the men and women who helped on September 11, 2001.  Banners were created and delivered to our local Moon and Crescent firefighters.  

MAHS Student is a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist! Subham Sahoo

Subham Sahoo, Moon Area High School senior, is a semifinalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program! Subham will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered in the spring of 2022.

Mr. Michael surprised the Moon Area High School Drama Club with a virtual visit from Joe Serafini! 

 

Mr. Serafini is a Pittsburgh-native and currently starring as Sebastian in “High School Musical: The Series” on Disney+. He discussed his journey from Bethel Park High School to Hollywood, the importance of high school theater, his college audition process, and many fun moments on the set of High School Musical.

As part of our effort to highlight more positive stories, MASD students may be photographed or video recorded when they have an academic, athletic or extra-curricular accomplishment.

If you do not grant permission for your student to be photographed or video recorded, you must complete the Media Opt Out Form in Skyward by September 30, 2021.  

If you grant permission for your child to be photographed or video recorded, no further action is needed. Your child will be automatically opted in, unless you complete the Media Opt Out Form.

MASD Update for Families -- September 1 MASD update

On Tuesday August 31, 2021, Governor Wolf announced that masks will be required in all Pennsylvania schools. Since masks were already required for our students, staff and school visitors, this mandate changes very little for our district. The purpose of this message is to make you aware that masking in schools is now mandated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  

MASD Open House Information Open House

We are excited to welcome families to an in person Open House this year! Additional details for each school can be found below.  

As a reminder, all students, staff and visitors are required to wear a mask while in our schools. This includes Open House. In order to limit the number of people at each event, we ask that families limit their attendance to parents/guardians of the student. Students are welcome to attend their Open House with their parents/guardians. We are asking for you to keep siblings at home, however we understand that there may be situations where siblings must attend with the family.  

Moon Area Homecoming Carnival carnival

Attention all clubs, teams, groups and PTOs: 

You are warmly invited to set up a booth at our fourth annual Homecoming Carnival, which will take place in the upper parking lot at the High School on Thursday, September 30 from 5:30-8:00 pm (following the Homecoming Parade).

First Day of School Reminders update

We are excited to welcome your children to school tomorrow (Tuesday, August 24)! I'd like to share a few reminders to help the first day of school go smoothly for everyone. 

Free Meals for the 2021-2022 School Year food service update

We are pleased to inform you that Moon Area School District will provide free meals for the 2021-2022 school year.  This program is available to schools and districts as part of the waivers issued by the United States Department of Agriculture. 

All students who are enrolled at Moon Area School District are eligible to receive a nutritional breakfast and lunch each school day at no charge to your household. No further action is needed for your family to receive free meals. “Extras” such as snacks and bottled water are not included in the free meal program and may only be purchased when your cafeteria account is funded.

MAHS Band Camp band

Moon Area High School Band participated in two weeks of Band Camp. 

The first week was on the MAHS campus learning the basic fundamentals of marching and while playing their instrument with emphasis on learning the halftime show for the season.  The second week of band camp, which was held at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA, continued with learning the halftime and competitive shows for the upcoming season while also bonding with their fellow bandsman to learn how to work together as a team. 

The two weeks culminated with a Friday Night Parent Show at Cameron Stadium on the campus of W&J.

The Moon Area Technology Department will be issuing student laptops at the High School in August. The pick up times will be between 8:00-11:00 am and 12:00-3:00 pm on the dates listed below.

August 12 -- 10th and 12th grades

August 13 -- 9th and 11th grades

August 16 -- 10th and 12th grades

August 17 -- 9th and 11th grades

 

All students in grades K-8 will receive their iPad or laptop during the first week of school.

Actor Drew Seeley Will Teach Masterclass for MAHS Students high school musical

To help the students prepare for their production of "High School Musical," Broadway/Television actor, Drew Seeley, will be coming to Moon Area High School on Thursday, August 26th to teach an audition masterclass. Not only did Mr. Seeley provide Zac Efron's singing voice in the original High School Musical, he actually wrote the hit song, "Get'cha Head in the Game."
