Operation Status Update -- Sept. 17, 2020

reopening plans

Dear Moon Area School Districts Parents/Guardians:

I am excited to announce that we have a plan to bring our students back to school! It’s been far too long since our schools were occupied by our young learners.

The COVID-19 infection data from the Allegheny County Health Department, The Pennsylvania Department of Education, and the Moon Area School District has remained consistently low.  Because of this, our district has begun the process of safely reopening our schools for in person instruction.

As long as the number of COVID-19 cases in our area remains steady or declines, our plan is to begin bringing students back to school for in-person instruction on October 5, 2020.

While I’m very excited to restore a sense of normalcy in our schools, I’m also committed to taking the necessary precautions to ensure we can open our schools for our students as safely as possible. Therefore, we will take a phased in approach to reopening our schools.

All elementary students (grades K-6) will have the opportunity to return to their classroom on Monday, October 5. They will attend school in person on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for full day, in person instruction. On Wednesday, students will participate in virtual instruction at home. The lessons may be synchronous or asynchronous. This will be at the teacher’s discretion and may vary week to week.

All secondary students (grades 7-12) will have the opportunity to attend school in person one day each week. Half of our students will attend school in person on Tuesday (beginning on Tuesday, October 6) and the other half will attend school in person on Thursday (beginning on Thursday, October 8). Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be virtual instruction days for all secondary students. In addition, either Tuesday or Thursday will be a virtual instruction day for students, depending on which day they attend school in person.

While many of our families have shared with us that they are ready to return to school, others have let us know that they are not comfortable returning to school. I understand that each family’s situation is unique. Our goal is to provide flexibility to families that might not be able to return to school and work to support their individual needs. Therefore, we will continue to offer an option for students to choose to continue to their education virtually.

Your child’s principal will share more building specific information tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 18). This information will include a link to an online form for parents to note whether their child will be returning to school for in-person instruction or if they plan to continue learning virtually at home. Please ensure you submit your child’s online form by Tuesday, September 22 so that we can plan accordingly for October 5.

Thank you for your continued patience, flexibility and support. I recognize virtual learning can be difficult. However, despite the challenges we all face, our students are making their very best effort to be active learners. Our teachers are working hard to prepare meaningful and engaging lessons for their students. Our parents are doing everything they can to facilitate learning at home. I’m so proud of our community for coming together to make the best of a challenging situation.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Sincerely,

Barry Balaski
Superintendent
Moon Area School District
