Dear Moon Area School District Families:
On Monday, November 16, 2020 school districts in Allegheny County were called to a meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Education. In addition, I have been in continuous contact with the Allegheny County Health Department.
As of this week, our county has been placed in the “substantial” range for COVID-19 community spread. On Friday, November 20, data will be released again. If the county is in the substantial range for the second week in a row, the Pennsylvania Department of Education will recommend that the district move to a full virtual operation. The district has consistently followed the metrics and guidance of PDE in making decisions regarding in-person instruction.
In looking at the preliminary data, I highly expect our county to be in the substantial range at the end of this week. If that is the case, here is our plan:
On Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24, all Hybrid Model students in grades K-12 will report to school in person.
On Wednesday, November 25, all students will be virtual as previously scheduled.
Thursday, November 26 through Monday November 30, students will be on break.
On Tuesday, December 1, we will initiate our Virtual Mode of Operation. This means all students K-12 will learn virtually beginning on December 1, 2020, unless notified otherwise.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health recommends that our COVID-19 community spread is reduced to at least the “moderate” range for two weeks before students return to school in person. With winter break approaching, our tentative plan is to be fully virtual through Friday, January 8 with the intention to return to our Hybrid Model on Monday, January 11, 2021. We will continue to monitor this situation and the data to determine if there is an opportunity to return sooner, however we wanted our community to have as much time to prepare based on current information.
If the COVID-19 community spread data is in the “moderate” range this Friday, November 20, then we will continue in our Hybrid Mode of Operation unless a shift in our mode of operation becomes necessary.
We will continue to evaluate COVID-19 data and follow the recommendations of the Allegheny County Health Department, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
We will let you know on Friday, November 20 in the afternoon our official plan for the next few weeks.
As always, thank you for your continued patience and flexibility.
