MAHS Senior Named Gates Scholar!

Subham Sahoo

Moon Area High School senior, Subham Sahoo, was recently named a Gates Scholar!

"The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to 300 of these student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential." (https://www.thegatesscholarship.org/scholarship)

In addition to being named a Gates Scholar, Subham was named a National Merit Finalist and a QuestBridge Scholar! The QuestBridge Scholarship is a very intense and highly selective scholarship for high achieving students.

Subham received a full academic scholarship to California Institute of Technology, where he plans to pursue a double major in computer science and computational neuroscience. Through his research, he hopes to help develop technology to help better the lives of those with neurological disorders and other special needs.

As Subham prepares to graduate from Moon Area High School, he has some advice for younger high school students.

"Keep an open mind and try new things," said Subham. "There are things you can do in high school that you might not think are possible. Take a chance. You never know what might work out."

"Always try pistachio ice cream," he said. "And, most importantly, always be kind. Pay it forward and pay it back. Never forget the people who have helped you along the way."

Subham also noted that the first man or woman to step foot on Mars is alive today and a part of his generation. With that realization, Subham set a new goal for himself that is literally out of this world.

"I'd like to be the first person on Mars," he said.

Good luck to Subham on all his future endeavors!
