The Moon Area Board of Education recently recognized Moon Area High School (MAHS) senior, Patrick Whartenby, who was the only MAHS student to be named a finalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship competition.
Whartenby was recently named a 2019 National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) Program finalist. Whartenby has received a Certificate of Merit by the NMSC for this prestigious achievement.
In the fall, Whartenby was among 16,000 semifinalists in the nation. The 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program selects semifinalists based on about 1.5 million individual 2018 Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) scores. Less than one percent of seniors are selected as semifinalists. Whartenby was the only semifinalist from MAHS in 2019.
This March, NMSC will announce finalist scholarship awards. Of the 15,000 students selected as finalists, 7,500 will received scholarships.
Whartenby demonstrates involvement both in school and within the community. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, American Cultures Club, Boy Scouts of America, and has volunteered with the Coraopolis Cooperative Food Pantry, World Vision, and his church. Whartenby is also a high honor student at MAHS and a member of both the cross country and hockey teams.
Whartenby will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) this fall.
Good luck and congratulations, Patrick!
