Seven Moon Area High School students recently placed first at the two Pennsylvania FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) regional qualifier robotics competitions.
Members of the winning MAHS team, Apollo Robotics, include Gabriel Gayoso, Chancharik Mitra, Jessie Murray, Thomas Schmitz, Carson Stuart, Ankita Somu, and Patrick Whartenby.
FTC uses STEAM concepts to encourage real-world problem-solving in a fun atmosphere. The competition is fueled by creative thinking and teamwork to challenge academic concepts of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The competing teams must construct robots to complete and achieve a set of tasks.
The challenge for this year’s competition was titled, "Skystone” which, according to FTC, challenged students to build a “superstructure for the future.”
Of the 23 competing teams, MAHS won first-place in Winning Alliance and also took home the Motivation Award at the December 7, 2019, West Central Pennsylvania Qualifier.
At the January 11, 2020, Southwestern Pennsylvania Qualifier, the team placed first in the qualifying round and again received the motivation award. They also claimed second-place for the Control Award.
Mitra received the designation of Dean’s List Semi-Finalist for the State Championship in Red Lion, PA, where the team competed from February 29-March 1, 2020.
