MAMS Student, Ria Khazanchi, Places First in Illustrated Earth Day Poem Contest for Second Consecutive Year

Moon Area Middle School (MAMS) 8th grade student, Ria Khazanchi, claimed first place for grades 6-8 in the Pittsburgh Section of the 2020 Earth Day Poem Contest. This marks the second consecutive year that Khazanchi has won the challenge.

The contest is hosted by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Participants in the contest wrote a poem that parallels this year’s theme of “Protecting Our Planet Through Chemistry.”

Khazanchi received a monetary prize and certificate for her achievement.

Khazanchi’s winning submission advanced her to compete in the national ACS Chemists Celebrate Earth Week poetry contest.

On a local level, Khazanchi also recently won the MAMS Mike Walter Memorial Award, an 8th grade contest which honors the memory of the former 8th grade science teacher. The contest is in tribute to the humor Mr. Walter brought to his classroom while teaching lessons. This year, participating students had to rely on their creativity and humor to display the concept of "element" in an illustration.

Congratulations, Ria!
