On Monday, January 13, 2020, the Moon Area School District (MASD) Board of Education welcomed coaches and captains of the boys soccer, boys football, and girls cross country teams for recognition for their performances this season.
Boys Soccer – Section Champions
The Boys Soccer team made headlines this fall with their 11-1 section record and 16-3 season record leading to their Section Championship title. This was the first time the team won a Section Championship since 2008.
Under the direction of Coach Earl Pannebaker, the team made it to the WPIAL quarter finals. In total, the team scored 85 goals this season and only had 20 goals against the team the entire season!
Coach Pannebaker and team captains Darek Panucci, Conor Suchar, and Justin Kopay, all of which are seniors this year. Justin Kopay was also recognized for being named to the Boys Soccer All-State team!
Coach Pannebaker received recognition this year by being named the Class 3A Section 2 Coach of the Year!
Football – Section Champions
Next, the Board recognized representatives from the high school football team. Coach Ryan Linn was in attendance with captains Brenden Luffey, Dante Clay, Logan Young, Dawson Snyder, and Jamal Littlejohn.
During this past season, the football team won their first conference title since 2003 marking the fourth overall conference title in school history. The team also won their first home playoff win since 2004 and had a 5-0 home record.
Brenden Luffey and Ben Bladel were named to the All-State team, as well, with Coach Linn being named the Class 5A Section 1 Coach of the Year!
Girls XC – MAC & Section Champions
And last, but not least, we have the girls cross country team - who were not only MAC Champions, but also Section Champions! The team was undefeated in the section with an 8-0 record under the direction of Coach Tim Hrivnak. The team was represented by captains Olivia Estright and Caitlin McGennis.
In every meet this season, the girls cross country team won by at least 10 points. The team claimed victory at the MAC Championship by 34 points ahead of second place West Allegheny. In the WPIAL Championship, the team finished in the top 10 in AAA for the first time in school history with a seventh-place finish overall.
Sophomore Mia Cochran was recognized in December for her WPIAL and State Championship titles. Mia also set a new course record this fall at the MAC Championship and remained undefeated the entire season!
Congratulations to all of our student athletes for all of your hard work this year!
