MAHS Accounting First Place Team

Moon Area High School (MAHS) students finished first and fourth in a financial statement analysis contest, part of a Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants conference, on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at Duquesne University.

MAHS has won the competition five out of the past six years.

Three teams of Moon students, who are enrolled in the Accounting 1 or the College in High School Accounting course, were among approximately 30 teams representing 21 schools throughout the region. More than 250 students attended the event.

The conference, referred to as the Accounting Career Day, is an opportunity to enhance the curriculum. Students had the opportunity to learn from professionals representing a variety of accounting disciplines. Speakers included Gina Ciarrocchi, KPMG; Bruce Lane, Microsoft; and Zane Long, Mylan Corporation.

The highest team point total in the competition determines the finishing order with a maximum score of 30. MAHS finished in first and fourth place with scores of 24.75 and 19 respectively. North Allegheny finished in second and third place. Members of the first, second, third, and fourth place teams received a trophy, gift card, or other gifts.

The first place team included: Connor Moran, Jess Dunn, Jacob Mowery, Tyler Pond, Carson Dominick, Alex Mecchia, Parker Medvid, Thomas Rash, Steve McCurry, and Caylie Dilley. (left to right in the photo above - photo taken by MAHS photography student, Kelsey Sparks).

The competition requires teams of students to analyze the financial figures of Mylan Corporation's 2018 annual report, which is submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
