Moon Area 5th graders welcomed a very special guest on Monday, November 25, 2019 - Mrs. Bernice Kelley.
Kelley spent her childhood in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (present-day Slovakia), from 1938-1946 and experienced the Nazi occupation in her hometown. During World War II, her father fought for the US but sent for his family in Czechoslovakia in July 1946 to be reunited in America.
Kelley spoke to students about living during a World War and immigrating to the McKees Rocks, PA, via boat with her family after the war.
Mrs. Kelley also engaged in a question and answer session with students as they asked about her difficulty learning a new language, her favorite part about America, and what her everyday life was like in Bratislava.
In addition to speaking with the students, Mrs. Kelley shared pictures of her family members to accompany her memorable stories.
This topic coincides with students beginning their book study of Number in the Stars by Lois Lowry, a story about a Danish family's impact in hiding and saving a young Jewish girl during the war.
Thank you for visiting, Mrs. Kelley!
