Middle School Girls’ Chamber Choir Spreads Holiday Cheer

Throughout holiday season, the Middle School Girls’ Chamber Choir represented Moon Area School District at several community events and school concerts. Their schedule included appearances in both the Middle School and High School Winter Choral Concerts, as well as performances at the Montour Heights Country Club, caroling in Moon Township neighborhoods to benefit the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund, and a tour of downtown Pittsburgh at the Omni William Penn Hotel and the City County Building.

After returning from Thanksgiving break, the choir carried on one of its most meaningful traditions by caroling through Moon Township neighborhoods, this year singing in the Bon Meade plan and Wyngate. In just over an hour of singing in the winter weather, the students collected $300.92 in donations for the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund. This marks the 11th year the Girls’ Chamber Choir has supported this cause through neighborhood caroling.  After their musical efforts, the group returned to the school to enjoy cookies and hot chocolate together.

The ensemble returned to the Montour Heights Country Club where they greeted guests with a cappella Christmas carols as members arrived for their annual holiday celebration. Their voices helped set a festive tone for the evening, continuing a tradition warmly embraced by the club and its community.

On December 8th, the choir spent the day in downtown Pittsburgh sharing their music in two memorable locations.  Their appearance at the Omni William Penn Hotel marked their second performance at the historic venue.  After a lunch break complete with hot chocolate and cookies, the students continued to the City County Building, where they performed on the grand staircase. This performance was livestreamed for the public to view, giving families and community members the opportunity to enjoy the music from afar. The students were treated to candy bars donated by Sarris as a token of appreciation for their hard work. Following their performance, the choir visited Pittsburgh’s iconic Creche, the only authorized replica of the nativity scene in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. View the performance.

The Moon Area Middle School Girls’ Chamber Choir, under the direction of Janice Barthen, has enjoyed a vibrant and meaningful winter performance season. This select ensemble is made up of auditioned 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who rehearse once a week after school. Members also participate in their grade level band, chorus, and orchestra, and audition each fall for the opportunity to join this dedicated group.

Thank you to the Moon Area Middle School Girls' Chamber Choir for beautifully representing our district at all of these events.
