Moon Area Teacher Selected for Inaugural Flight 93 National Memorial Educator Symposium

As Moon Area School District continues to prepare students to become informed, compassionate and engaged citizens, one of its educators recently had the opportunity to learn from one of the nation's most powerful historical sites.

Mrs. Sheri Gregory was selected to participate in the inaugural Flight 93 National Memorial Educator Symposium, a three-day professional learning experience designed to help educators teach future generations about the events of September 11, 2001, while exploring the enduring values of civic responsibility, service, leadership and resilience.

The symposium brought together educators from across the region to collaborate on meaningful classroom lessons that connect the story of Flight 93 to students' lives today. Through workshops, discussions and hands-on activities, participants explored ways to teach one of the most significant moments in American history with both accuracy and compassion.

One of the most meaningful experiences for Mrs. Gregory was meeting family members of the passengers and crew who lost their lives aboard Flight 93. Hearing their personal stories offered a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice and unity demonstrated on September 11.

"It was an amazing three days," Mrs. Gregory said. "Meeting the family members and hearing their stories made history feel deeply personal. It reinforced the importance of helping students understand not only what happened that day, but also the character, courage and selflessness that emerged from it."

Throughout the symposium, educators worked together to develop classroom lessons that encourage students to think critically about civic responsibility and the role individuals can play in strengthening their communities. Participants also took part in guided experiences throughout the Flight 93 National Memorial, learning how the memorial's design, artifacts and exhibits preserve the legacy of the passengers and crew for future generations.

Recognizing the emotional nature of the symposium's content, therapy dogs were available throughout the event, providing comfort and support as educators reflected on the stories they encountered.

Each participant also received a commemorative challenge coin, a symbol traditionally presented to first responders and individuals recognized for service and commitment.

The experience concluded with exciting news: every educator who attended the inaugural symposium has been invited back as a special guest for the Flight 93 National Memorial's 25th Anniversary Commemoration next year.

Mrs. Gregory looks forward to bringing what she learned back to Moon Area School District, helping students better understand not only the events of September 11, but also the lasting lessons of courage, resilience and service that continue to inspire future generations.
