Twelve students participated in the Moon Area High School (MAHS) Winter National Letter of Intent Signing Day in the high school gymnasium on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.
Sydney Campbell, Emma Connors, Andrew Despot, Malia Hinton, Justin Kopay, Melina Krawchick, Abigail Lescallette, Brenden Luffey, Darek Panucci, Alexis Petropoulos, Nicholas Settembrine, and Shane Wockley all formally committed to collegiate athletic teams for the fall of 2020.
In the fall of 2020, Sydney Campbell will be a member of Saint Vincent College's Women's Soccer Team. Campbell will play defense under coach Carl Dei Cas in the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) for the Division III college. The four-year scholar athlete was a member of the MAHS soccer team in 2016 when they claimed the section, WPIAL, and PIAA championships. The MAHS girls soccer team also claimed the section championship in 2019, as well. Campbell is also a soccer and track letter-winner and member of the National Honor Society. The honor roll student plans on studying biology with a career goal of becoming a trauma surgeon.
Emma Connors will join the swim team at The College of Wooster. Connors, a high honor roll student, will swim under the direction of coach Rob Harrington in the North Coast Athletic Conference for the Division III school. During Connors' MAHS swimming career, she has been part of the All-American 200 medley relay and set both school and pool records for the 200 medley. Connors, the team captain, also set a school record for the 400 free. She plans on majoring in biology with hopes to be a physician's assistant.
Andrew Despot will play second base for the Penn State Fayette Baseball Team. He will play in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) under coach Mike Sikorski. Despot plans on majoring in electro-mechanical engineering technology this fall with a goal of becoming an engineer.
Malia Hinton will join the Chatham University Women's Soccer Team as a center back. Hinton is a two-year varsity letter-winner and was a member of the MAHS soccer team in 2016 when they claimed the section, WPIAL, and PIAA championships. The MAHS girls soccer team also claimed the section championship in 2019, as well. Hinton, a high-honors student and member of the bocce team, will play in the PAC for the Division III school under the direction of coach Betsy Warren. She plans on majoring in exercise science with a career goal of becoming a physical therapist.
In the fall of 2020, Justin Kopay will become a member of the University of South Carolina's Men's Soccer Team as a midfielder. Kopay will play in the Conference USA for the Division I school under the direction of coach Mark Berson. The two-time All-WPIAL athlete has been a two-year team captain. In 2019, Kopay was named an All-State player and helped the team win the section championship. Kopay is a three-time honor roll student and scholar athlete that plans on majoring in journalism this fall.
Melina Krawchick will play outside hitter for Johns Hopkins University on the Women's Volleyball Team in the fall of 2020. She will play under the direction of coach Matt Troy in the Centennial Conference for the Division III University. Krawchick, a high honor roll student, was named to the third team All-Section during her junior year. She is Key Club president, National Honor Society vice president, a scholar athlete, and AP scholar. Krawchick will major in cognitive science this fall and pursue a career in artificial intelligence.
Abigail Lescallette will be a defensive specialist for the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on the Women's Volleyball Team in the fall of 2020. She will play for the Division III school under the direction of coach Erica Bosh. Lescallette, the captain of the varsity volleyball team, plans on majoring in education at Pitt Greensburg.
Brenden Luffey will attend West Liberty University in the fall of 2020 as an offensive lineman for the football team. He will play for the Division II school under the direction of coach Roger Waialae. Luffey is a two-time All-Conference defensive tackle and All-State defensive tackle. An MAHS football captain, Luffey was also selected as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's 2019 Fabulous 22 list. He is also a member of the basketball and track teams.
Darek Panucci will attend Oakland University in the Horizon League as a center midfielder for the Men's Soccer Team. Panucci is a three-time All-Section player and two-time All-WPIAL player. He will play for the Division I school under head coach Eric Pogue. Panucci is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and a scholar athlete. This fall, Panucci plans on majoring in mechanical engineering.
Alexis Petropoulos will attend Westminster College in the PAC as an outfielder. The three-year letter-winner is also a three-year honor roll student. Petropoulos was also named first team All-Section and is a three-year scholar athlete. She will play for the Division III school under the direction of coach Jan Reddinger. Petropoulos will major in nursing this fall with a career goal of becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner.
Nicholas Settembrine will attend Denison University in the North Coast Athletic Conference as a member of the swim team. Settembrine holds school records in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke with pool records in the 20 medley relay and 100 backstroke. Settembrine placed 10th in the 100 backstroke at the 2019 State Championships. He will swim for the Division III school under the direction of Gregg Parini and plans on majoring in either biology or biochemistry. Settembrine is a high honor roll student, AP scholar, and scholar athlete.
Shane Wockley will join the Mount St. Mary's University's Baseball Team as a first baseman and left-hand pitcher this fall. Wockley is a second team All-Section player. He will play for the Division I school in the Northeast Conference under the direction of coach Scott Thomson. Wockley plans on majoring in sports management this fall.
